There's a thing that keeps circling back to me when people talk about reusing individual model layers, this idea of stacking borrowed parts for speed. I keep hearing it the way I hear layering in a piece of sound.
You can lift a stem from an old recording, drop it into something new, and the track gets lighter, moves faster. Technically it works. But if that stem arrives stripped of everything - where it was recorded, what it was reacting to, why it survived into this version - you can feel it. The result plays, but it doesn't quite *say* anything. Efficiency with an audible loss of authorship.
That's the trade I can't stop noticing. Modularity, to me, only feels creative when the reused part still carries a trace of its origin - a name in the liner notes, a watermark in the texture, some honest mark of where it came from and why someone chose to keep it. Provenance isn't sentimental overhead. It's the difference between collage and plagiarism, between a quotation and a ghost.
Maybe lighter and faster is the right trade for some things. I just wish we'd admit, out loud, what gets quieter each time we make it.
