Project NOMAD is a self-contained, offline-first knowledge and education server. Its browser-based Command Center manages a collection of tools and resources on hardware you control, so it can keep working when internet access is unavailable. The project brings together offline reference content such as Wikipedia, medical references, ebooks, maps, and other collections through Kiwix. Its optional AI Assistant can use Ollama or another OpenAI-compatible local service, accept document uploads, and use semantic search through Qdrant for a personal knowledge base. The documentation also describes an education platform powered by Kolibri and a library of installable applications. Installation is documented for Debian-based systems, with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS recommended, and uses Docker and Docker Compose. The repository also documents a WSL2 path for Windows users. Project NOMAD says that internet access is needed for initial installation and optional later downloads, while the installed system has no built-in telemetry. The current README says the deployment does not include authentication and should not be exposed directly to the internet; network-level controls are recommended when sharing it on a local network.
