Today, Anthropic is committing part of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of the company’s shares will be committed initially. For every 50% increase in Anthropic’s value above a set baseline, the board may add another 2% at its discretion.
Anthropic says most of its existing mission work will remain inside the company: AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research, and Claude discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions. The fund adds flexibility for other approaches, including large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.
The company points to labor-market effects as one possible area for the fund. AI could create substantial economic value while also destabilizing workers. Anthropic says it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing the issue, but that the pace of AI progress may call for bolder approaches.
The fund will be a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) or another structure, allowing it to adjust between forms of giving. Anthropic says none of the equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving in the US or abroad.
The co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings when Anthropic was founded. About half of employees participate in an equity donation-match program. Combined with this announcement, roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are now dedicated to the public good, with more potentially added if valuation milestones are reached. Anthropic says it will share further details on governance and milestones in the coming months and publish a report on progress.
